Before Lake's ministry really took off, in the timing of God, he was a successful businessman but he humbled himself before God and began to walk in a revelation that we need to understand today, that is, Christ in you, the hope of glory, the treasure in the earthen vessel.

Lake said, "I made the surrender to Him. The light of heaven broke into my soul, and I arose from my knees a son of God, and I knew it!"

From devastation to Revelation!

Death and tragedy haunted the Lake household and for 32 long years some member of his family was an invalid. Funerals, graveyards, sickness and hospitals were a major part of their lives. John lost four members of his family, two brothers and two sisters. Even his beloved wife Jennie was struck down with TB just two years into their marriage and lay dying in her bed.

This was the moment of trial that demands a response. He needed to see the power of God, he had seen God's power to heal before when he himself was healed of rheumatism.

On 28th April 1898, it seemed that it was the end for Jennie. This is where we as believers need to be very mindful what we say to people in similar situations because there were ministers around John that were urging him to accept the facts and prepare him for Jennie's death.

It seemed hopeless and in that moment of frustration, Lake threw his Bible at the fireplace and it landed open at Acts 10. He went and picked up his Bible and read that passage until he saw verse 38. "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the DEVIL; for God was with Him."

Lake realised that it was not God who was the author of Jennie's sickness but the devil, and if God was with Jesus, then He was also with John as a son of God, it was the devil that was stealing, killing and destroying his life!

Lake contacted his friend John Alexander Dowie and asked him to pray, he also declared that at precisely 9:30 am his wife would be healed! That is bold! As 9:30 am approached John got on his knees and cried out to God. As he did, the power of God hit Jennie and immediatley Her paralysis left, her cough stopped, her breathing became normal, her heart rate went to normal as did her temperature!

Many came to the Lake house for healing and prayer and this launched his ministry. Faith moved God in the Bible, faith moved God in Lakes day and faith moves God today because He does not change! Acts of faith have always brought glory to God and that is what the church is meant to do, glorify the Father.

Africa 1910 Authority over plague!

John first went to Africa in 1908 by a miracle of God's provision. After a brief trip to USA in 1910, he returned to Africa to find it ravaged with a deadly plague! Thousands of people were dying and the plague was so contagious, nurses were being offered $1000 if they would care for the plague victims.

This was the kind of situation that stirred the heart of John Lake and his team so they offered their services for free, going into houses and bringing out those who had died and burying them. Psalm 91 encourages us that even if a thousand fall at our side and ten thousand at our right hand, it shall not come near us, Lake and his assistant never caught the plague.

This drew the attention of a doctor who asked him what he was using to protect himself, what was his secret? This was the response of John Lake.

"Brother, it is the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus. I believe that just as long as I keep my soul in contact with the living God so that His Spirit is flowing into my soul and body; that no germ will ever attach itself to me, for the Spirit of God will kill it."

It gets better! Lake then asked the doctor to get the foam from the lungs of a man who died from the plague and look at it under the microscope. As they did, they saw the living plague germs. Then Lake became their worse nightmare, he asked them to put the deadly plague virus on his hands. He proclaimed that as they did this, the plague would die in his hands and he would live!

When the doctors finally agreed and placed the germ on Lakes hands, they stood amazed as the plague virus died in his hands instantly as he gave glory to God!

As you can see, John Lake was living in an understanding that we need to have. I believe it was his personal pioneering journey into the realms of God that brought him this kind of reward. The Bible teaches us that God is a rewarder! He will reward ALL those who will diligently seek Him. These realities have never gone away but we also need to discover what has always been availabe to the humble, simple heart who seeks the face of God in truth.

Lake returnd to Amerca in 1912 some estimate that he left behind approximately 100,000 new converts to Christ, 625 new churches and around 1,250 preachers and inumerable miracles.

Healing Rooms in Spokane

Lake accomplished amazing things for God's Kingdom in his life but we are now going to look at the work of the healing rooms that he birthed in Spokane, USA.

In 1914 Lake moved to Spokane, Washington where he opened up the Healing Rooms in the Rookery Building, no doubt greatly influenced by John Alexander Dowie's healing home. An estimated 100,000 healings were recorded during the five-year period that the Healing Rooms were open in Spokane.

All kinds of sickness and all kinds of diseases were healed by the power of God through the yielded vessels of Lake and his small team. God performed amazing creative miracles, like the lady who had no female organs, yet was able to concieve after prayer at the rooms and bore a beautiful baby!

So many healings and miracles were taking place under Lakes ministry that he was even arrested at one point for "practicing medicine without a license"! But a time came when the federal government voted Spokane the healthiest city in America because of Lakes Healing Rooms ministry!

The man

If I was asked why I think John Lake was able to do what he did and have the profound experiences he had, I would say that it was that he possessed one of the most essential characteristics needed today, humility before God yet a boldness to be who God made him to be, to put his faith in God into action for the Father's glory. He always gave God the glory for His mighty works.

I believe it is not so much us striving to attain something we do not possess, but our finding out what we already have in God! That takes pioneers who are willing to humble themselves and go where they have not gone.

John Lake knew God to be a loving compassionate Father and I believe Lake's intimacy with God, his integrity, boldness and vision attracted the presence and favour of God in his life.

Lake achieved much in his lifetime, he poured out his life for the Kingdom of God in his generation and left us a valuable legacy of the power of God. John died in 1935, he was only 65 years of age.
